November 2024 Review

It's time for our big look back at Edmonton weather for a November 2024 which had a bit of everything.

November 2024's average High of -1.1°C ends up below our 10-year average of 1.1°C, and ranks as the 100th warmest on record. That's just ahead of 2022 & 2017, but below other recent Novembers.

The average Low of -7.5°C was basically right on the 10 year avearge.



High Temperatures

The start of November 2024 was well above average, and the end was well below. We weren't close to any records, but we end up with 14 above average Highs, and 16 below average.

On average November has 18 above-freezing Highs. 2024 was a little low with 16, although that included a 15°C day (15.4°C on the 8th) which is pretty unusual in November. We also had 3 Highs below -15°C, which is the most since 2011.



Low Temperatures

For November 2024's Lows we set a new record of 5.2°C on the 7th.

The back half of the month was well below average, although also well above the bottom of our range. 17 were above average and 13 were below.

On average November has 3 Lows above freezing, and 2024 had 5.

We didn't get down to -20°C, although we got close -19.5°C on the 28th. November averages around 3 Lows below -15°C, and 2024 had 7.



Cold Days in a Row

This month wasn't as extremely cold as some of the Novembers that we got back around 2010-2014, but November 2024 did have 11 Lows in-a-row below -13°C, which is the most since 1996.



Warm & Cold Months

November's average High of -1.1°C was -1.6°C colder than the 20th century average, so it's a blue bubble here. The average Low of -7.5°C was 1°C warmer, so it's a little orange bubble.



Across Canada

November 2024's Highs were cool in the west and warm in central Canada. That ranged from Calgary at -2.3°C below their 20th century average for November, to Quebec City at 3.9°C above theirs.



The Horserace

With one month left 2024 currently ranks as Edmonton's 15th warmest year on record overall, at 1.7°C above our 20th century average. That's high, but it's well below 2023's 1st place 3.3°C.

2024 currently ranks as the warmest year on record for Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montréal & Charlottetown. For Kelowna, Quebec City & St. John's it's #2, and for Toronto, Moncton and Halifax it's #4~5. We will see where things up at the end of the year.

For Winnipeg 2024 is in a tight race with its previous warmest year, 1987. But Montréal, Ottawa & Charlottetown are all well ahead of their previous records.



Precipitation

In November Edmonton averages 20mm of precipitation (rain+snow). 

In 2024 Blatchford got 28mm, the airport got 20mm, and Stony Plain got 19mm. So it was pretty average, following a very dry October.

By the end of November we average 422mm of precipitation for the year.

In 2024 the local stations are well below that, because of the dry July. The airport's 352mm is the highest, followed by 345mm at Blatchford, with the rest below that.

For total precipitation for the year so far St. John's is well in the lead with over 1500mm - that's high, but not extreme. Vancouver's 1168mm is the most they've had since 1999. Toronto's 1,081mm is their wettest Jan-Nov on record, ahead of 1,025mm in 2013.

For big November storms: 

• Halifax got 52.8mm on the 23rd
• St. John's got 49.2mm on the 23rd, and 3 other 30mm+ days
• Vancouver got a lot of water (203mm, or about 1/2 of what Edmonton gets in a year), but the biggest single day was the 16th with 26mm.

Snow

In November we average 20cm of snowfall, and 8 days with snow. 2024 was pretty average, with 24cm and 9 days.

At the end of November we average around 10cm snowdepth. Of the local stations Elk Island was the highest with 19cm, and the rest were from 11-15cm.

In 2024 our snowdepth didn't take off until November 20th, which is a few weeks later than a lot of years. But last winter, with the big 2023-2024 El Niño we didn't really see lasting snow until mid-January.

At the end of November the cities with snowfall so far are Calgary's 34cm, Edmonton's 24cm, Moncton's 15cm, and (checks notes) Vancouver's 4cm, and a few more below that.

(although cities like Winnipeg and the Saskatchewan cities don't measure snowfall anymore)

For snowdepth measurements a few more cities are on the board. Saskatoon got up to 38cm, Dawson City to 30cm, Calgary to 24cm, Edmonton to 13cm & Regina to 11cm, with a few others below 10cm.



December

In December we average about 10 days with Highs above 0°C.

For the Lows, about half of the time December will hit -25°C, but since 1990 there have been 6 Decembers which didn't hit -20°C (including 2019 & 2023). 

 December averages 16cm of snow.
