July 2022 Review

That was a pretty pleasant July, 2022. Let's see how it compared to other years.

July 2022's average High of 24.6°C ranked as 27th warmest since 1880. That's below 2021's 25.9°C, but in the same range as 2014-2018.

The average Low of 14.6°C was actually really warm, and ranked as 3th warmest. That's behind 14.9°C in 2021 and 15.2°C in 2007.

High Temperatures
It feels like a long time ago now, but the first week of July was actually pretty cool, with July 2nd's High only 14.4°C. But from the 7th onward things warmed up, and were mostly above average.

The count ends up with 20 Highs above-average and 11 below.

In July we average about 11 Highs of 25°C or more, and in 2022 we were up at 17. That included 2 Highs which reached 30°C. And on the opposite end, we had 2 Highs below 15°C.

With the long stretch of warm days from the 7th to the 30th we had 24 Highs in-a-row above 22°C. That's the 6th longest streak. 2006 has the record with 34 days in-a-row.

Warm Days So Far
For the summer so far we have had 19 days reach 25°C. That's around average, after a slow start to the summer. It is down from warm summers like 2021 and 2015-2018, but more than 2020 or 2019.

We've had 2 days reach 30°C, which is typical enough.

Low Temperatures
July 2022's Lows were pretty warm, with 25 above average and only 6 below. We set 3 new records for warmest-Lows on July 16th, 28th & 29th.

July averages about 5 Lows below 10°C, and 2022 only had 1, on July 3rd at 7.1°C. July also averages about 6 Lows above 15°C, and 2022 was up at 15.

Warm & Cold Months
July 2022's average High of 24.6°C ends up 1.4°C above the 20th century average. It's a medium, orange circle compared to warm Julys like 2021, or 2015-2018.

The average Low of 14.6°C was 3.6°C warmer than the 20th century average, and continues a long string of orange.

For July Highs across the country St. John's was the most above-average, while poor Winnipeg gets yet another below-average month. For the Lows, Edmonton was the most above-average.

In 2022 Stony Plain was well above that at 121mm, thanks to a few big storms. Blatchford and the Airport were below average with 55mm and 65mm.

The bubbles here are rain events for June & July, and for 2022 things really dried up starting around July 8th. We often get storms throughout the whole month of July, but not this year.
