June 2022 Review

It's time for our big look back at June 2022!

June 2022 wasn't hot, but it also wasn't super-cold.

The average High of 21.1°C ranked as 58th warmest since 1881. Recently both 2020 & 2019 were colder. The average Low of 11.4°C was actually really warm, and ranked as 5th warmest.

High Temperatures
The Highs for June 2022 were mostly pretty close to the 30-year average. There weren't any particularly hot or cold days: the warmest was 26.9°C on the 26th, and the coldest was 15.4°C on the 14th. The count ends up with 16 Highs above-average and 14 below.

In June we average about 18 Highs of 20°C or more, and in 2022 we were up at 23.

For "hot" days, on average we have 5 days reach 25°C. This year only had 2, which was the fewest since 2014. And last year with the heatdome June had 15.

Warm Days So Far
For the summer so far we have had 30 days reach 20°C, which is right around average.

However, we've only had 2 days reach 25°C, which makes this a bottom-10 year. Although recently 2011, 2005 & 1996 all only had 1 day reach 25°C by this point.

Low Temperatures
June 2022's Lows started quite warm, but by the end of the month were right around average. The warmest was 16.1°C on June 4th, and the coldest was 6.5°C on June 2nd. The count ends up with 18 Lows above-average and 12 below.

About half of the time June will have a Low below 5°C, but 2022's coldest was 6.5°C. And June averages 2 Lows above 15°C, and this year we just had 1.

The Horserace
After 6 months of 2022, so far January-June ranks as our 36th warmest year overall. The red line for the Highs has been very flat since April, because they have been extremely average. The Lows have been a little above-average, and that line has crept up a bit.

Warm & Cold Months
June 2022's average High of 21.1°C ends up 0.4°C above the 20th century average. It's a small, orange circle compared to warm Junes like 2021, or 2015-2018. The average Low of 11.4°C was 2.8°C warmer than the 20th century average, and continues a long string orange Lows.

Are cool Junes ever followed by hot summers? It's pretty random. We've had a lot of Junes which were cooler than 2022. Years like 2019, 2010, 2005 & 2004 stayed in the blue through August. But most of the others had at least an above-average July or August.

Across Canada
Across the country June's Highs were a little above average in St. John's, Toronto & Regina, and a little cool in Vancouver. For the Lows, Edmonton's were the most above-average.

Precipitation
In June we average 76mm of rain.

In 2022 Blatchford got 123.9mm, Stony Plain got 131.2mm, and the airport got 14.5mm. That's well above average, but in the same range as what we got in June in 2019 & 2020.

June averages 15 days with precipitation.

In 2022 Blatchford had 15 days, Stony Plain had 17 days, and the airport had 18 days.

For storms June 14th was the big day, with 41mm at Blatchford, 49mm at the airport, and 57mm at Stony Plain.

By the end of June we average around 205mm of precipitation for the year.

So far Blatchford has 233.6mm, Stony Plain has 255.4mm, and the airport has 268.9mm. Of all of the local stations St. Albert has the most with 277.8mm, and Campsie has the least with 191.4mm.
