September 2026 Review

It's time for our big look back at September 2026, which was another pretty quiet month.

September 2026 was our coldest September since 2020. But historically that still puts it well above average.

The average High of 19.3°C was the 30th warmest.

The average Low of 12°C was 10th warmest. (compared to 100 years ago September's average Lows have increased by 5°C)

High Temperatures
September's Highs basically bounced around the average all month, with a few extra warm days around the 21st. The coldest High was 11.1°C on the 26th, and the warmest was 28°C on the 21st.

Overall 16 Highs were above-average, and 14 were below.

September averages 12 20°C Highs, and 2026 got 12.

4 of those might get to 25°C, while 2026 got 6 of them.

2022 & 2024 both had several 30°C Highs, but 2026's warmest was 28°C.

And September averages 2 Highs below 10°C, but 2026 had none.

Warm Days So Far
We might still see some warm days in October.

But right now 2026 has had 103 Highs reach 20°C, which is typical nowadays, but the historic average was closer to 90.

And 38 of those got to 25°C, which is just a bit above average.

Low Temperatures
September 2026's Lows were mostly above average: 19 were above, with 11 below.

The warmest was 14.6°C on the 2nd. The coldest was 1.4°C on the 15th. So it was another frost-free September for Blatchford.

Blatchford hasn't had a September frost since 2019. Although they used to happen every few years.

First-Frost
Blatchford's average first frost is September 30th, and Stony Plain's is September 25th. But so far they're both frost-free.

The airport & Campsie got their first frosts on the 15th & 13th, which is a little later than their averages of the 10th & 6th.

Warm & Cold Months
September 2026 gets medium orange/warms dots.

The average High of 19.3°C was 2.4°C warmer than the 20th century average. The average Low of 7.8°C was 3.1°C warmer than the 20th century average.

The Horserace
With 3 months left in the year (and the promise of a super El Niño on the way) 2026's temperatures currently sit as Edmonton's 23rd warmest on record, at 1.48°C warmer than the 20th Century average.

Recently 2025 & 2024 ended the year as 7th & 10th, while 2023 was 1st.

Across Canada
Across Canada September was cool in the east, and above-average everywhere else. Saskatoon's Highs were 2.8°C warmer than their 20th century average, while Moncton's were 0.8°C below theirs.

Precipitation
In September Edmonton averages 32mm of Precipitation. After the ridiculously rainy summer, September was below average.

In 2026 Blatchford got 14.4mm, the airport got 21mm, and Stony Plain got 21.7mm.

2026 So Far
By the end of September we average around 382mm of precipitation for the year, but in 2026 the local stations are still well above average. Blatchford is up at 716.8mm, Stony Plain has 571mm, and the airport has 496mm.

716.8mm is Blatchford's 2nd rainiest year on record. It's just 8mm behind 1900's record of 724.8mm. In October we average 18mm, and before the end of the year we average 54mm.

Precipitation Across Canada
Edmonton's 717mm has it well ahead of the other prairie cities, which are all between 350-400mm. But central & eastern Canada are mostly from 800-1000mm, with Halifax close to 1100mm.

For big September storms Halifax led the way with 72.6mm on the 4th. That first week saw 40mm+ storms in Toronto, Halifax, Charlottetown (x2), St. John's, Regina & Saskatoon. Compared to that the rest of the month was pretty quiet.

October
For October, we average about 1~2 Highs of 20°C, but half of the time there are none.

October also averages 2 Highs below 0°C, and 14 freezing Lows.

And...we average 7cm of snow in October. Although 2021, 2022, 2024 & 2025 had none.

October 2025 Review

September 2025 was Edmonton's warmest and basically driest on record. But did that continue into October 2025? Let's take a look...

October 2025 was above average, but not too extreme. The average High of 13°C was the 33rd warmest. That's below 5th place 2022, but above everything else since 2015. The average Low of 1.3°C was the 23rd warmest, and in the same range as 2024 & 2023.

It's always worth mentioning that October along with April are our least changed months. The Lows have warmed by a degree or two, but the average Highs aren't too different from 140 years ago. That's quite different from a month like January or even July.

High Temperatures
October's Highs were mostly close to or above average. The only particularly cold days were the 12th & 13th, although they were nowhere near the bottom of our range. Overall 21 Highs were above average and 10 were below.

October averages around 2 20°C Highs, and 2025 had 2. The warmest was 23.3°C on the 7th.

And it averages 2 below-freezing Highs, and 2025 had 0, although lots of years have 0. 2025's coldest was 2.3°C on the 12th.

Low Temperatures
October's Lows saw a bit of a dip mid-month, but overall 21 were above average and 10 were below.

October averages 13 below-freezing Lows, and 2025 had 11. But most Octobers get below -5°C, and on average we get 3 of those. But 2025's coldest was -3.6°C on the 14th.

First Frost
Blatchford's first frost was October 4th, a few days later than the average of September 29th. Stony Plain was a day after that on the 5th. Campsie and the Airport both had their first frosts back in September, which is typical for them.

Warm & Cold Months
October 2025 was above average, so it's a small orange bubble here. The average High of 13°C was 1.9°C warmer than the 20th century average. The average Low of 1.3°C was 1.8°C warmer.

So far February is 2025's only blue month.

Across Canada
Across the country October was another basically unanimously above-average month (Vancouver & Victoria were right on the edge). That joins September, August, June, April & March.

Quebec City was the most above-average, with Highs 3.4°C warmer than their 20th century average.

The Horserace
After our record September, October slowed down a bit. But with 2 months left in 2025, its average temperature is currently Edmonton's 3rd warmest overall, at 2.2°C above the 20th century average.

The Highs are our 3rd warmest, and Lows are 10th warmest.

With 2 months left, 2025's average temperature is top-5 in Dawson City, Kelowna, Edmonton & St. John's, and top-10 in Calgary, Montréal, Moncton & Charlottetown.

Precipitation
In October we average 18mm of precipitation. After the extremely low September, October was closer to average. The airport recorded 11mm, Campsie had 15mm, Stony Plain had 16mm, and Blatchford got 20mm.

By the end of October we average around 395mm of precipitation for the year.

2025 has had a really low September, July, April & February, so it's below average. Campsie has 372mm, and the airport has 362mm. But then Stony Plain is down at 283mm, and Blatchford has 269mm.

By October our big storm season is usually over. For 2025 the biggest day was Blatchford's 10.4mm on the 26th, and Campsie got 8.9mm on the 11th.

Snow
And October 2025 was snowfree. The airport averages around 7cm of snow in October, but we didn't get any in 2025, 2024, 2022 or 2021. 2023 got 2.7cm, while a year like 2016 got 22.2cm.

Sometimes we get early snow in October of September, but that melts off.

Once we hit November 1st though, that's the point where snow starts to hang around. Although in 2024 the airport made it to November 22nd without lasting snow, and 2023 got to December 3rd.

Precipitation Across Canada
These are the precipitation totals for 2025 across the country.

Quebec City is way out ahead with over 960mm.

Most of these cities are pretty average, but St. John's 820mm is actually well below average, and Halifax's 746mm is its 2nd lowest on record.

Across the country the biggest October storms were:
  • 59mm in Ottawa
  • 47mm in Halifax
  • 43mm in St. John's
  • 39mm & 38mm in Montréal

Snow Across Canada
Calgary was the only city in our list to record any snow in October. They average 11cm, but in 2025 they only got 1cm.

November
For November, we average around 18 Highs above 0°C, but we also start seeing lows of -10°C or -15°C. -20°C even shows up sometimes, like in 2022, and 2010-2015. 2014 got down to -29.8°C.

Over the next few months our average High drops from 5°C down to around -7°C at new years, and spends a bunch of the winter around -4°C.

The average Low drops from -3°C to -16°C, and spends a bunch of the winter around -13°C.

September 2025 Review

It's time for our big look back at Edmonton weather for a hot September 2025.

September 2025's average High of 23.8°C was the 2nd warmest on record, just behind 24°C from 1938.

The average Low of 8.8°C was the 4th warmest. For recent years that joins 2024's 2nd warmest 9.2°C, and 2022's record of 9.4°C.

Even though September 2025's Highs and Lows weren't #1 individually, combined they made this the warmest September on record. For 2025 that joins our 5th warmest August, and 6th warmest May.

In recent years we've had:
  • #1 May in 2023, #6 in 2025
  • #1 June in 2021, #3 in 2023
  • #1 July in 2024, #3 in 2023, #6 in 2022
  • #1 August in 2022, #5 in 2025
  • #1 September in 2025, #3 in 2022, #5 in 2024
  • #1 October in 2022
  • #1 December in 2023
The 5 months that haven't gotten new #1s since 2021 are January-April, and November.

High Temperatures
September 2025 was warm, with only 1 High below average (just barely) on the 24th. Most of the month was well above average, including 2 new daily records on the 13th and 20th.

September averages around 11 20°C Highs, and 2025 had...24? Yup, 24.

That included 12 25°C Highs, when the average is around 3.

There were no 30°C days, but it did have 3 29°C Highs on the 12th, 13th & 20th.

The coldest High was 15.9°C. September averages 8 Highs below 15°C.

Hot Days So Far
We're getting to the end of our hot days, and 2025 will likely end up with 14 30°C Highs, which ties 1961 for the 3rd most on record (behind only 2024 & 2021).

And 2025's 56 25°C Highs is the 5th most on record, and the most since 1961 (1898's record is 64).

Low Temperatures
September's Lows were also mostly well above average, but did include 6 below-average days. But there were also 3 new daily records on the 14th, 17th & 18th.

September averages 6 Lows above 10°C, and 2025 had 13.

It also averages 1 below-freezing Low, but 2025 was frost-free. The last time that we had a September frost was back in 2019.

2025 Records
So far 2025 has set 8 new daily record Highs. That's below 2024's 11, but above the 5 from 2021-2023.

And 2025 has 6 record warmest-Lows. That's more than a lot of years, but 2021-2024 all ranged from 10-15.

Early Frost History
This shows Blatchford's history of early frosts, counting the 0°C Lows which occurred each year before October.

Right now we've gone 6 years without a September frost. The longest gap on record was 7 years from 1975-1981.

Around town, the airport did get its first frost on September 25th, which is about 2 weeks later than its average. And Campsie's September 5th frost was right on its average.

The Horserace
With 3 months left in 2025, its average temperature is currently our 5th warmest overall, at 2.1°C above the 20th century average.

That's due to a warm January (#13), May(#6), August (#5), and September (#1).

The Highs are our 4th warmest, and Lows are 9th warmest.

Warm & Cold Months
September 2025 was well above average, so it's a big orange bubble here. The average High of 23.8°C was 6.9°C warmer than the 20th century average. The average Low of 8.8°C was 4.2°C warmer.

Across Canada
September 2025 another above-average month across the country. Edmonton was at the top at 6.9°C warmer than the 20th century average. Victoria was at the bottom, at 0.4°C warmer than theirs.

Precipitation
In September we average 32mm of precipitation, and 2025 was SUPER low.

The airport recorded 0.6mm (although it had quite a few missing records), Blatchford got to 0.9mm, and Stony Plain had 1.5mm.

Campsie (100km NW) got up to 13.3mm, but that's still well below average.

By the end of September we average around 377mm of precipitation for the year.

The dry September means that Campsie and the airport are a bit below average around 350mm.

But Stony Plain is way down at 267mm, and Blatchford is down at 250mm.

Storms? What storms? By September our big summer storm season is over, but we still average around 10 days with Precipitation. But not in 2025.

Snow
On the other hand, no September precipitation also means no September snow. The last time that we recorded September snow was September 28, 2019 in Stony Plain. And September 2018 was also very snowy.

Precipitation Across Canada
These are the precipitation totals for 2025 across the country.

Quebec City is still way out ahead with over 865mm. Montréal & St. John's are over 700mm.

And like Edmonton, Calgary recorded basically no precipitation (0.4mm) in September.

Across the country the biggest September storms were:
  • 50mm in Regina
  • 38mm & 23mm in Toronto
  • 25mm in Quebec City
  • 20mm in Charlottetown

October
For October, we average about 1~2 Highs of 20°C, but half of the time there are none.

October also averages 2 Highs below 0°C, and 14 freezing Lows.

And...we get 7cm of snow on average in October, although 2021, 2022 & 2024 had none.
