October 2025 Review

September 2025 was Edmonton's warmest and basically driest on record. But did that continue into October 2025? Let's take a look...

October 2025 was above average, but not too extreme. The average High of 13°C was the 33rd warmest. That's below 5th place 2022, but above everything else since 2015. The average Low of 1.3°C was the 23rd warmest, and in the same range as 2024 & 2023.

It's always worth mentioning that October along with April are our least changed months. The Lows have warmed by a degree or two, but the average Highs aren't too different from 140 years ago. That's quite different from a month like January or even July.





High Temperatures

October's Highs were mostly close to or above average. The only particularly cold days were the 12th & 13th, although they were nowhere near the bottom of our range. Overall 21 Highs were above average and 10 were below.

October averages around 2 20°C Highs, and 2025 had 2. The warmest was 23.3°C on the 7th.

And it averages 2 below-freezing Highs, and 2025 had 0, although lots of years have 0. 2025's coldest was 2.3°C on the 12th.





Low Temperatures

October's Lows saw a bit of a dip mid-month, but overall 21 were above average and 10 were below.

October averages 13 below-freezing Lows, and 2025 had 11. But most Octobers get below -5°C, and on average we get 3 of those. But 2025's coldest was -3.6°C on the 14th.





First Frost

Blatchford's first frost was October 4th, a few days later than the average of September 29th. Stony Plain was a day after that on the 5th. Campsie and the Airport both had their first frosts back in September, which is typical for them.





Warm & Cold Months

October 2025 was above average, so it's a small orange bubble here. The average High of 13°C was 1.9°C warmer than the 20th century average. The average Low of 1.3°C was 1.8°C warmer.

So far February is 2025's only blue month.





Across Canada

Across the country October was another basically unanimously above-average month (Vancouver & Victoria were right on the edge). That joins September, August, June, April & March.

Quebec City was the most above-average, with Highs 3.4°C warmer than their 20th century average.





The Horserace

After our record September, October slowed down a bit. But with 2 months left in 2025, its average temperature is currently Edmonton's 3rd warmest overall, at 2.2°C above the 20th century average.

The Highs are our 3rd warmest, and Lows are 10th warmest.

With 2 months left, 2025's average temperature is top-5 in Dawson City, Kelowna, Edmonton & St. John's, and top-10 in Calgary, Montréal, Moncton & Charlottetown.





Precipitation

In October we average 18mm of precipitation. After the extremely low September, October was closer to average. The airport recorded 11mm, Campsie had 15mm, Stony Plain had 16mm, and Blatchford got 20mm.

By the end of October we average around 395mm of precipitation for the year.

2025 has had a really low September, July, April & February, so it's below average. Campsie has 372mm, and the airport has 362mm. But then Stony Plain is down at 283mm, and Blatchford has 269mm.

By October our big storm season is usually over. For 2025 the biggest day was Blatchford's 10.4mm on the 26th, and Campsie got 8.9mm on the 11th.





Snow

And October 2025 was snowfree. The airport averages around 7cm of snow in October, but we didn't get any in 2025, 2024, 2022 or 2021. 2023 got 2.7cm, while a year like 2016 got 22.2cm.

Sometimes we get early snow in October of September, but that melts off.

Once we hit November 1st though, that's the point where snow starts to hang around. Although in 2024 the airport made it to November 22nd without lasting snow, and 2023 got to December 3rd.





Precipitation Across Canada

These are the precipitation totals for 2025 across the country.

Quebec City is way out ahead with over 960mm. 

Most of these cities are pretty average, but St. John's 820mm is actually well below average, and Halifax's 746mm is its 2nd lowest on record.

Across the country the biggest October storms were: 

• 59mm in Ottawa 
• 47mm in Halifax 
• 43mm in St. John's 
• 39mm & 38mm in Montréal

Snow Across Canada

Calgary was the only city in our list to record any snow in October. They average 11cm, but in 2025 they only got 1cm.



November

For November, we average around 18 Highs above 0°C, but we also start seeing lows of -10°C or -15°C. -20°C even shows up sometimes, like in 2022, and 2010-2015. 2014 got down to -29.8°C.

Over the next few months our average High drops from 5°C down to around -7°C at new years, and spends a bunch of the winter around -4°C. 

The average Low drops from -3°C to -16°C, and spends a bunch of the winter around -13°C.
